Obituary of Ernest Anton Pilz
On April 6, 1934 in Merkelsgrun, Czechoslovakia Ernest Anton Pilz made his entry into this world. His parents Emil and Franziska, along with his older sister Herta welcomed his arrival with eager anticipation.
His mother worked in several different factories and his father was in the Czech army so Ernie and Herta were cared for by their maternal grandmother while their parents worked.
In 1948 Ernie, Herta and their widowed mother arrived in Tupper to live with Ernie's aunt and uncle, Resi and Franz Tamm. Ernie attended the old Tomslake School for a short time. Later, he worked in logging camps and in the oil patch. In the early 1950's, when rural electrification came to Tomslake, Ernie was employed on the crew installing hydro poles, digging them in by hand with a spoon and bar.
In 1958 Franziska and Ernie moved onto their own farm. In 1960 they started a dairy and milked cows until 1971, then switched over to beef cattle.
Sybel Koecher came into Ernie's life and they were married in June 1986.
From then on Ernie and Sybel were often seen working together, hauling hay down country roads or checking cows in the community pasture. Where Ernie went, Sybel went.
Like most farmers, Ernie was not immune to spring auction fever. Over the years, he accumulated 12 antique tractors, most of them John Deere.
Ernie also appreciated music of the classical variety, taking in an Andre Rieu concert several years ago in Edmonton.
Ernie had a soft spot for children and his jovial nature and twinkle in his eye appealed to children of all ages. Ernie was a child at heart, always making the time to play with the children of family friends.
Part of Ernie's charm was his sense of humour. He was known to say some pretty outrageous things. He also had his own unique way of working cattle. Most people herd cows with horses, dogs or quads, but Ernie used his blue Ford pickup truck, which he affectionately called his "blue heeler".
The Pilzs did manage to do some traveling, mostly inside Canada, but in 2001, they made a trip to Europe. Ernie had not been back to his hometown in 53 years. More recently they attended their niece's wedding in Mexico.
Ernie enjoyed the company of his friends one on one, but was uncomfortable in a crowd. He never wanted to be the center of attention. He had a warm and generous nature.
Ernie was predeceased by his father Emil; mother Franziska; uncle Franz; tante Resi. Ernie passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 76 years. A memorial service was held Friday, May 21, 2010 at 2:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Home; Pastor Ruth Czerniak officiated; Interment will be at a later date. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Ernie to the Dawson Creek & District Hospital Foundation.
