Helen Wolfe

Obituary of Helen Catherine Wolfe

Helen was the oldest of two daughters, was born in Hamilton, Ontario on February 6, 1934 to Bob and Ellen Gibson. Helen started school in Hamilton Ontario, but over the next few years she attended several schools in 3 different provinces, as her father was in the military and was transferred all over. In 1944 he was transferred to Dawson Creek. After the war ended in 1945, the family moved back to Hamilton. In 1947 the family was on the move again and headed back to Dawson Creek. We are not sure if tossing pennies into the Niagra Falls and wishing to come back had anything to do with the move, but back we came and stayed. In 1948 we moved to East Pine then back to Dawson Creek one year later. Helen met Tom Wolfe in 1951 and after a two year courtship they were married June 13, 1953. They lived in Dawson Creek, then moved their house to Willow Valley in 1954, where they raised their six children. After her family was grown up, Helen went back into the work field part time as a camp cook at Anzac, as well as spending a few years doing Income Tax for H&R Block in Dawson Creek. Helen loved to watch equestrian riding and figure skating. Her favourite singer was Elvis Presley then the Irish Rovers, and all country music. She met Danny Hopper and fell madly in love with him and his music. Many cold winter evenings were spent with friends and neighbours making fudge, playing cards and sampling refreshments from that little brown jug. Helen was very active in the Roots group, Time out for seniors (painting), Country Quilters & Kiskatinaw Fall Fair, this group she was past vice President, Secretary as well as treasurer. Helen's dream was to go to Ireland, where her father was born, but sadly she didn't make it all the way. In London, England she became ill. After a long stay in the hospital there she was returned to the Dawson Creek Hospital and then transferred to Pouce Care Home where she resided until her passing. She may have been discouraged now and then, but she never gave up hope that one day she would be able to do the things she wanted to and go home to stay, not just visit. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Bob & Ellen Gibson, her husband, Tom Wolfe Sr, and two grandsons Aaron Hauber and Trent Wolfe. She is survived by her six children, Tom Jr. (Donna), Carla (Joe), Steven, Shawna (Rob), Rodger (Louise), Dean (Penny). 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, Sister, June (Frank) Wolfe and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 2:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Chapel. Rev. Marilyn Carroll officiated, interment followed in the Willow Valley Cemetery.
