Clara Biggar

Obituary of Clara Biggar

Mom was born in New Westminster July 31st 1929 to Allen and Elsie Johnson. Shortly after her birth she lost her Mother who was only 19. She lived with her grandmother for quite some time until her father met the apple of his eye Helen Stead. They were married and Mom was then taken to live with them in Port Mann. In the following years her brother Ward was born and then her sister Helen. Mom attended school and later quit and went to work waitressing in New Westminster. While working here she met a handsome fellow named Arnold Sater and thereafter followed a courtship. On September 21st 1945 at the age of 16 Mom married Arnold who was 26 at the time. They eventually moved to Galiano Island and it was there they started their family of Allen, Karen and Erling. Mom read meters for BC Hydro, being chased by many dogs and surprised by her worst fear SNAKES! After this job she decided to switch professions and acquired a mail route to the north end of the island. At the young age of 36 Mom became a widow, losing her precious Arnold to a heart attack. She left Galiano after that, to reside on the mainland where she completed her GED. She worked in the Woodwards pharmacy and once again picked up a mail route using a right hand drive scout vehicle. While living in Burnaby Mom met Percy Biggar. On September 11th 1971 they were married. In 1993 Mom retired. They packed up all their belongings and moved to Chetwynd to be closer to us. It was so nice to have Mom close by after being so far apart for so many years. Mom's favorite television program of all time was Jeopardy. We always credited that show for her maintaining such a good memory. Mom lived a quiet life and she had such a wonderful sense of humor. She never felt sorry for herself no matter how bad things were. She always found the words to make you laugh and make light of her situation to cheer someone else up. She always said how lucky she was; to live close to family, to enjoy her pets, her television, and to have her independence. Mom had three children, seven grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her Mother Elsie, Stepmother Helen, Father Allen and Brother Ward. She is survived by her husband Percy who resides at Rotary Manor, her sister Helen, her children Allen, Karen (Art) and Erling. As in the Footprints poem God carried Mom so many times in the last few years and on April 8th 2009 he carried her for the last time. A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Chetwynd Baptist Church. Pastor Bill Evans officiated, interment will be held at a later date. She will be missed by us all. Eulogy presented by daughter, Karen Buckley.
