Obituary of Marvin Phillips
Marvin Phillips was born in Doris, Alberta on November 5, 1934 and was the only child of Lee and Emma Phillips.
Marvin grew up in rural northern Alberta where he went to grade school at Fort Assiniboine. He completed his schooling at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and afterwards took a job working on the Northern Alberta Railway.
Marvin was a hockey player and played for the Wanham team, which is how he met Bridgette. The rival at that time was the Spirit River Senior team with a host of Listhaeghe boys in the line up. Some of the fans in the crowd were the Listhaeghe boys' sisters, including Bridgette. This led to the start of a great romance. They were married on September 2, 1959 in Spirit River, Alberta. Very shortly afterwards they moved to Chetwynd where Marv joined his parents with the family general store.
His next career development was attributed to his physical stature. Marv became the manager at the local cocktail lounge in Chetwynd. While working there, he was offered a job with B.C Hydro where he had a very successful career of 36 years.
Uncle Marv was a great fan of sports. He enjoyed watching his sons, nephews, and grandchildren. He also watched sports on TV. Besides playing hockey Uncle Marv was an avid curler. This resulted in the mantel being littered with curling trophies. In his younger days Marvin enjoyed playing baseball and was a renowned pitcher and pinch hitter.
Marv's home away from home was cruising in his RV. He could be seen driving behind the wheel with his Merle Haggard hat. He truly enjoyed camping, sitting around the campfire, listening to his radio that was always close by his side.
His favourite author of all times was Louis L'amour. Marv was a keen gardener who was known for growing beautiful flowers and very large pumpkins.
Marv was predeceased by his grandparents Duddely and Elizabeth Phillips, Michael and Catherine Donavan, and his parents Lee and Emma Phillips.
He was a loving husband and father, grandfather and uncle; Marvin will be fondly remembered by his wife Bridgette of 49 years, and their children Cindy and Dennis Malkinson, Marvin and Deanna Phillips, Ward and Shandell Phillips, Rick and Angela Phillips and Leah Phillips, and by his 10 grandchildren, Joanne, Nicole, Leeland, Duncan, Kaila, Mckenzie, Dion, Paige, Abby, and Leevi, and numerous brother and sister in-laws, nieces and nephews.
