Obituary of Alger Rae Travis
Alger Rae Travis, known to most as Art, was born on February 25, 1924 in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. He was the fifth child born to Alexander Russell Walter and Rhoda Travis. He went to two schools in the Medstead area of Saskatchewan; in grade 8 the teacher sent him home until he could behave, that was end of his schooling!! He served in the Navy from 1941 to February of 1945; after the war he served 10 years in the Air Force, then the family moved to the homestead in Cotillion, Alberta.
Dad loved children. At any large gathering, he could be found in the midst of the kids.
He always pulled for the underdog. He would give you the shirt off his back. Dad did not care for material things, he could do without.
He was a life-long fan of hockey and watched it for his entire life; he played hockey and his sense of fair play helped him ref the game for years.
Dad loved animals and had a way with horses. He fed rabbits, deer, and birds in his yard. In the process he also fed squirrels and coyotes. He always had a dog as a companion. He had a love of nature - he loved to go on walks and ride horses and boat on the river and to camp.
Dad had a sense of humour, or as he would say a senseless humour.
He drove his younger sister nearly crazy when she said "usually do" and he thought it sounded like "udilly-do".
If his grand kids said "Grandpa" he would respond "What-pa"; he was called silly grandpa by the younger grandkids.
He leaves behind to carry on his spirit his wife of nearly 62 years: Ruth, children: Barbara, Margret and Peter, Russel and Sandi, Cliff and Gwen, Tracy and Lorelle, Patrick, Michele and Paul, Shelley and Alvin and Annette; grandchildren Neota and Shad and their children Matthew, Samantha, Ashlea and Brock; Annita and Jason and their children Jaynell and Braden; Teresa and Ian and their children Kristen, Zachary, Charli-Ann and Josh; Toni and Shayne and their girls Nicole and Natasha; Lylie and Kevin and their daughter Santana; Cory and Jen and their girls Shaun and Emma; Jen and Vern and their children Colten and Raya; Kristin and Brad; David and Ami and the boys Korbin and Ethan; Donald and Christen, Alexander and Andrew; Nadine, Chance, and Keith; Lyle, Taylor and Victor; Stephen, Jordon, and Damon.
Now he is part of the trees and water and birds and deer and paths and wind; he loved them too.
Art passed away peacefully on March 15, 2009 in Dawson Creek at the age of 85 years. A Memorial Service was held on March 24, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. First Councilor Clifford Travis officiated, Interment will be held at a later date.
