Alice Gauthier

Obituary of Alice Mary Gauthier

Alice Mary Gauthier was born on February 3, 1937 in Wabasca, Alberta. She was the youngest daughter of Sophie and William Auger. Her sisters were Mary Agnes, Hilda (who died at age 16), and Madeline. Her only brother, Pat, died in 1975. Alice was raised in the bush country around the lake, which is now settled and known as Wabasca. At that time this area was treed, with family cabins spotted here and there. Alice met her future husband, Don Grubjesic in the 1960's their son, Nick was born in 1962, and Jerry was born in 1963. Dawson Creek was where they had made their home. When Nick was about five years old, the family moved to Beryl Prairie where Nick started school, then to Lynx Creek in 1966. In 1974 Alice and Don separated and Alice supported herself by cleaning at the dam and she also worked at the Clearview Motel in Hudson's Hope. Alice was a devoted and loving grandmother to Nicholas, Donny, Autumn, Taylor, Tyler, Brandon and Kristen, and to countless others, whether they were related to her or not. Alice met George Gauthier in the Early 1980's they spent many years doing things they both loved: hunting, trapping and horseback riding, picking medicine, fishing, camping and making dry meat and moose hides. Alice was best known for, her moccasins. She operated a little craft store out of a cabin behind their house for about twenty years. After George passed away on March 17, 2007, the date of their 15th wedding anniversary, Alice was lonely and missed him very much. While traveling to her nephew's wedding on June 21st, Alice became very sick and had to be taken by ambulance from Whitecourt to intensive care at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Jerry and his daughter Kristin sat at her side throughout her last days. Nick, young Nicholas and Donny were also with her when she passed, as well as extended family from Wabasca. Aunty Madeline was a great source of comfort and strength as Alice's condition worsened. Alice passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at the age of 70 years. Alice will be remembered for her strong personality, her friendliness, loyalty, love of family, friends and animals, and her trademark smile. It is very sad to lose her, but she is with her loved ones now. Mussi cho.
