Obituary of Wilma Bernice Hansen
Wilma Bernice Hansen, a long time resident of the Peace River area passed away peacefully, July 2, 2007, at the age of 88 years.
She was born on March 5, 1919 in Stalwart Saskatchewan, the second oldest of five girls.
The drought and recession in the spring of 1931 prompted a move by the family to the Peace River Country where they began homesteading. Throughout that time she was to learn the many qualities that she passed on to her family.
After completing grade 12, Wilma went to work at the Pouce Coupe Hospital where she was to meet her lifelong friend Dorothy. These two best friends began dating best friends Earl Merrick and Elton Hansen. It wasn't long before two marriages took place. Earl and Dorothy, and Wilma and Elton.
With the outbreak of the 2nd world war, Wilma and Elton moved to Vancouver where Elton got a job in the shipyards. Karen and Keith were born there and at the end of the war when the family returned to Dawson Creek, the two younger children, Diane and Gary were born.
Wilma devoted her life to her family and to the many stray cats and dogs who needed a home. She was a generous caring person to people and animals alike. She was a devout scholar and when she graduated grade 12 in 1936 she was a student of Dawson Creek's first graduation class. No small accomplishment considering her transportation to and from school was by horseback. Her quest for knowledge stayed with her for her lifetime and she completed many courses, such as bookkeeping, long term care, Brazilian embroidery and pattern making to name a few.
Wilma had strong values and a willingness to help others that caused her to be respected in the community. She was a great cook and her grandchildren often reaped the benefit of her bountiful kitchen. Even though she enjoyed the kitchen, Wilma and Elton could often be found at the Co-op having lunch with friends. She left a legacy of self sacrifice and devotion to her family.
