Obituary of Doris Nicholson

Doris Beaton was born on August 20th,1924 in Piepot Saskatchewan and raised by her foster family, the Bertrams, after her Mother was killed in 1925 when their car was struck by a train. Fred Beaton, the Dad had to work out so Doris, sister Ella and brother Harold were all looked after by relatives until they were teenagers. Doris got her grade ten before moving to Maple Creek, where she worked at the local hospital until marrying Jim Nicholson. Doris and Jim were married by a justice of the peace in Edmonton in the spring of 1945.They made their first home at Muskeg Lake and Doris soon learned the ways of the bush as a trappers wife. After a few years on the trap line and having three boys, Gordon, Dave and R.D., trapping wasn't paying the bills anymore so they packed up and moved into Dawson Creek. There they all lived in a couple of tents until Jim could build a house. It wasn't long before they packed up again and moved to Pouce Coupe where Jim worked for the Department of Highways. A fourth child was born there, finally a girl. Jim named her Marilyn after the movie star Marilyn Monroe. Jim and Doris finally settled on five acres on the edge of town where they stayed for many years, making Pouce Coupe their home. Doris fell in love with Pouce and with everything it had to offer. She was always able to create a warm atmosphere for her family and anyone who visited. When the children were older, Doris began working at the Hillcrest Motel and Post Office in Pouce. She later worked at the local hospital for many years until a car accident which claimed the life of her husband Jim, and in which she sustained multiple injuries, forced her to retire. Eventually, Doris moved into Spruceland Manor where she resided for ten years before moving into South View Apartments for only six months. Due to health reasons she transferred to Peace Haven and finally to Rotary Manor until her passing on July 22nd. Doris had many interests in her life time. She was an active member of the seniors, where she won many ribbons and medals over the years participating in floor curling. She enjoyed traveling and was able to go on an Alaskan cruise with Gordon and Caroline. She was an expert knitter, outfitting the family with mitts, scarves ect. She simply loved life in general and her family most of all. Every life she touched was enriched by her love and friendship. Doris was predeceased by her husband Jim in 1974 and granddaughter Micheal in 2003. She is survived by; sons, Gordon (Caroline), Dave (Cheryl), R.D.; daughter Marilyn Rayner (Jim); 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A Memorial service was held on Friday, July 27th at 2PM from Reynars Chapel, Rev. Marilyn Carroll officiated. Very Respectfully Reynars Funeral Home and Crematorium
