Obituary of Josephine Mary Cumming

Josephine passed away October 19, 2007 in Dawson Creek, BC at the age of 85 years. A funeral mass was held Monday, October 29, 2007 at 11:00 am from the Notre Dame Catholic Church. Fr. Venerando Sabacan officiated. Interment Service will be at a later date. Joey was born to Israel and Dorilla Fortier in Clyde, Alberta February 8, 1922. She was the eldest of seven children. Joey's mother died when she was twelve. Family friends, Oscar and Dorilla Chevrier raised Joey in the Clyde and Vimy area of Alberta where she attended school. During World War II, Joey clerked at Eaton's in Edmonton. In 1944 she married John Cumming and later moved to Rosetown, Saskatchewan where her three children were born. She returned to work in 1958 at Dominion stores in Calgary, Sears in Edmonton and finally for many years at the Dawson Creek Sears Catalogue store. Joey curled for many years, then later in life found a new passion…golf. She was an active and successful member of the senior ladies at the Dawson Creek Golf Club. When she was not on the golf course, she was working in her garden. Winter evenings were filled with laughter playing scrabble or bridge with her friends. Joey's warm welcoming smile and willingness to help will be greatly missed by all she touched. Joey was a devoted parishioner of Notre Dame Parish and a dedicated volunteer with the Dawson Creek Hospital Auxiliary. Joey will be fondly remembered by sisters; Lucy (Roy) Phillips, Edmonton, AB, Yvonne Romaniak, Williams Lake, BC, brother; Archille (Jane) Fortier Vegreville, AB, sons; Daniel (Noni) Cumming, Kingston, ON, Gordon (Karen) Cumming, Edmonton, AB, daughter; Denise (Allister) Pedersen, Cranbrook, BC, grandchildren; Kristy Pedersen, Christopher (Ada) Cumming, Stephen Cumming, Michael Cumming, Jenny (Andre Duguay) Pedersen, great-grand daughter; Nina Cumming and John Cumming, father of her children. Funeral Arrangements were under the care of Reynars Funeral Home and Crematorium Dawson Creek, BC.
