Obituary of Shirley Mae Smith
Shirley Mae Smith lived in Dawson Creek for 3 years and passed away in Prince George on December 30, 2007 at the age of 74 years. She lived in Salmon Arm prior to moving to Dawson and in Revelstoke prior to that.
Shirley was born in Windsor Ontario on May 6th, 1933 to Charles and Jesse Smith. She had three brothers and one sister. She was the fourth child of five.
Shirley grew up in Leamington and Windsor areas of Ontario, that is also where she went to school.
Shirley worked as a Radar Operator for the R.C.A.F. prior to moving to B.C. in 1965. While in Vancouver, she worked as a telephone operator for B.C. Tel, where she met her husband. She was a good wife and excellent mother to two children, a son, Norris Loftus and daughter, Jodi Loftus. She also found time to be a bookkeeper and a parts go-fer for a home-based logging company for about 20 years.
Her spontaneous personality made her very easy to get to know. She was totally honest and could call a spade a spade. She was organized in whatever she did and was a strong support person if someone needed it. Her family and friends were the biggest part of her life.
Shirley just loved to play golf and tried to watch Tiger Woods' tournaments whenever possible. She also was very good at playing the organ. Video games created a very good pastime also. Her favourite music was the 50's and 60's, as is usual for the generation that was young at that time.
She was very proud in being a part of A.A. for over twenty and has made many friends in the organization here, as well as Salmon Arm, Revelstoke and Merritt, B.C.
Shirley was from a Essex, Ontario farm family and this was reflected in her hospitality and exceptional cooking skills. The fridge may have looked like it didn't have anything to eat in it, but she always made spectacular meals from it. Her house was always clean and neat…this may have been a product of being in the R.C.A.F.
Shirley always said that she could pack and unpack a household blindfolded as she probably moved a dozen times following logging jobs with her husband and family.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Jesse smith and two brothers, Bruce and Ted Smith.
She will always be loved and remembered by her daughter Jodi, son Norris, her ex-husband Wayne Loftus, her six grandchildren, Scott, Jason, Kassandra, Kelly, Samantha and Erica, sister Evelyn and brother Don.
Her family firmly believes that she is in the company of Jesus Christ and we shall see each other again someday.
A Celebration of Life was held Friday, January 11th, 2008 at 5:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Chapel. Rev. Marilyn Carroll officiated. Interment will be at a later date.
Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium.
