Obituary of Curtis Lyle Cardinal

Curtis Lyle Cardinal was born to his mother Verna Cardinal at 9:20pm on April 3, 1970 in Dawson Creek, B.C. Curtis lived most of his life in Dawson Creek, sharing his great sense of humour sitting around joking and telling stories with family and friends. He learned to shoot at age 6 in Chetwynd when his mom, Noel, and Clarence were doing target practice trying to shoot a can. As he grew older, he became a great hunter knocking down moose or elk with one shot. Curtis was lovingly nicknamed Cat by his friends as he was so light on his feet and could sneak up on them. He started playing pool at the Friendship Centre when he was about 8 years old. This started his lifelong love of the game of pool, playing in pool leagues and often winning tournaments, one which took him to Las Vegas. In 1981, Curtis moved to Prince George to live with his Aunty Hazel for a year. During this time he began bowling, playing baseball and learned to play the trumpet. When he came home to Dawson Creek, he also excelled in break dancing, and continued playing ball in both men's fastball and slow-pitch leagues. When he was 13, Curtis told his friend Reggie to ask his sister Sharon to go bike riding with them. From that point on, Sharon became the love of his life. They were blessed with a daughter Shyann in 1988. Curtis was a hardworking man who worked in the bush for many years running power saw. While working for Cree Woman Contracting, Curtis won power saws for his excellent skills. Music was another interest in his life. Curtis's favorite song was called Sure Enough by Chris Cummings. While Sharon was visiting last week he played her that song for the last time reminding her that he still loved her. In the spring of 2007, Curtis became ill and was diagnosed with cancer. Throughout the year he was in and out of the hospital many times. Curtis was very brave and strong and fought to the very end. Curtis passed away surrounded by all his loved ones on February 29, 2008 at 7:38 pm. He will be sadly missed, but will live forever in our hearts as a beloved father, son, brother, cousin, uncle and friend. Curtis was predeceased by his maternal grandfather Paul Greyeyes, his uncles Kenny and Roger Greyeyes, and paternal grandparents Theresa Fritz and Billy Gullion. Curtis leaves to mourn his daughter Shyann Ashley Hambler, his unborn grandchild, his mother Verna Cardinal, his father Ernest Houle, brother Neil, sisters Liane, Sherry, Monica, Tammy, Shelly, Colleen, Trina, and Raven. His grandmother Elizabeth Greyeyes, aunts, uncles, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and many, many friends. A funeral service was held on Thursday March 6th, 2008 at 2:00 pm from Notre Dame Catholic Church. Fr. Michael Anyasoro officiated. Interment followed in the Brookside Cemetery.
