Obituary of Sig Loberg

It is with heavy-hearts but with much love and lots of fond memories that we announce the passing of our beloved relation and friend, Sig Loberg. Sig passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 with his loving wife, Barb, at his side.

Sig Loberg was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta.  He went to a one-room school called Balder School at Pioneer Point, Alberta.  He moved to Dawson Creek when he was 14 years old until he went to Camrose Lutheran College in Alberta.   Sig was a well-read man and loved to learn; he was very quick-witted. Sig was an uncomplicated man; he was not a man of many words but when he did speak what he had to share was profound and meaningful.

Sig lived the majority of his life in Moberly Lake, B.C., with his wife Barb, their sons and grandsons. Moberly Lake is where Sig met and fell in love with his life-long partner Barb (Garbitt) Loberg.  At the age of 29, they were married on August 5, 1972, at Moberly Lake, B.C (46 years).  Sig was a self-taught man of many-trades. He was a consultant/carpenter, a stucco-man and brick-layer.  He loved to build things and to handle wood and he built many homes at Saulteau First Nations, Moberly Lake and Chetwynd.  Over the decades, Sig employed a lot of relations and local community members with his construction company: Sig Loberg Construction.   

Sig was a very non-judgemental and accepted all human beings.  It was only natural that he was a lay-pastor for the Chetwynd Shared Church.  Sig was always helping neighbors and living by the good words of the testament.  Sig lived by the belief that everyone deserved to be given the benefit of the doubt; he accepted that we all make mistakes and we are all capable of being better human beings.  A life-long member of the Chetwynd Fellowship Baptist Church, Sig was a man of faith and a believer in God’s teachings. 

Sig was proud of his Norwegian heritage and loved to eat lutefisk and lefsa.  He also loved First Nations culture, especially Kokhum Garbitt’s bannock, beaded buckskin jackets, moccasins, dry-meat and all things Cree.  A life-long music lover, Sig was a local DeeJay in Chetwynd playing “golden oldies” and country tunes for local residents of Chetwynd and Moberly Lake called “Over the Hill Gang”.  Sig was very musical; he played the banjo and guitar.   Sig loved collecting antique cars and had quite the collection; he loved working under-the-hood. Sig could fix anything.

Sig Loberg is survived by his wife of 46 years; Barb Loberg, two sons; Monty and Mitch, grandsons; Martell and Mickey, and granddaughter; Jayli Wolf, as well as siblings; Adeline Sandnes, Esther Gustafson and Nels Loberg.

Sig was predeceased by his first-born son; Mickey Loberg; parents; Ragwald and Annetta Loberg, brothers: Paul, Johnny, Ray, and Edgar, sister’s; Jeanette Naslund and Lorna Hanson, nieces; Audrey Gustafson, Anetta Degenstein, and Cindy (Sandnes) Gerstel and nephew; Reggie Loberg.

Sig loved people; all of our relatives and community and people loved him which is why the loss of Sig was so profound!   Sig will be greatly missed.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Pine Valley Exhibition Park, 3900 51 Avenue, Chetwynd, BC. Pastor Bill Evans officiated. Interment followed in the Tuscoola Mountain Cemetery.
