Obituary of Peter Vesaniemi

Peter Vesaniemi passed away peacefully and with family by his side at his home in Dawson Creek, BC on Friday, November 23, 2018.

Peter was born on November 12, 1927 in Huittinen, Finland, the second child of Erkki and Aili. He immigrated to Canada in 1951 at the age of 24, as Peter was always looking for adventure.

Peter lived 4 years in Edmonton, and 5 years in Prince Rupert, before finally settling in Dawson Creek in 1960. Peter worked at the Bennett Dam until 1965, and then worked for school district #59 for many years, before finally setting up his own successful business as Peter’s Carpentry in 1979.

Peter was married to his loyal companion and sweetheart, Elsa and mother of his two daughters Maija and Hanna, and numerous foster children.

Peter became a parent at a late age, in today’s standards, but because of this gift of children, dad chose to sacrifice a high pay job and benefits as an employee to start his own business. He bought a small farm paying 27% interest, started Peters Carpentry, had employees, kept farm life going with yard work, keeping the road open in winter, looking after some cattle, and getting firewood for the shop, house and sauna. Also, he would watch his children grow, and be there for every moment of their lives. We are not sure how he did it all, and I’m sure those of you who have owned businesses and farms can marvel at this as well. He managed to do everything and have quality time for his family, who was his focal point.

Peter loved to be busy and worked to accomplish things of quality. His workmanship still decorates this community in the homes in many forms; windows, doors, cabinets, siding etc.…. and in the lives of those who had the privilege of being acquainted with him. His work ethic and honesty were his trademark, as was his love of God and spiritual things.

Dad, may you rest in peace until we meet again on Resurrection morning. What a day that will be. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18.

Peter’s family would like to invite you to come help celebrate Peter’s life with them on Monday, December 3, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 9201 14 Street, Dawson Creek, BC. Pastor Calvin Chwyl will officiate. Interment will be at a later date.
