Obituary of Hazel Howie

Hazel Howie, a resident of Dawson Creek, BC, formerly of Summerland, BC and Westlock, AB, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2019, with her daughter by her side, in Dawson Creek, at the age of 102 years.

Hazel was born at Westlock, AB  on August 10 1916 Frederick and Elizabeth Allen in Hazel Bluff, AB.

Hazel married Archie Howie July 16, 1935. They farmed in Westlock area until 1958 when they bought Dapp Corner Store. They sold the store in 1963 and semi-retired on the farm again. Hazel worked at Edgar Drugs for many years. In 1974 they moved into Westlock, then in 1988 decided to move to a warmer climate, so they moved to Summerland, BC.

Hazel worked hard on the farm and at the store. She was a Great Mother, great cook and homemaker. There are many memories of coming home to the aroma of fresh bread and other baking. She loved her garden and always had beautiful flowers. Hazel also enjoyed going out for picnics. She was a rather card shark in playing canasta and even played a 29 hand in crib. Hazel was a lot of fun and had a very joyful laugh, which we all enjoyed.

Hazel moved to Dawson Creek, July 2014 to be closer to family.  In 2015, she moved to Rotary Manor.

Hazel’s family would like to say a special thanks to all the caregivers that took such good care of her during her time there.

Hazel was preceded by her husband, Archie (1994), son in laws, Tom Morland (2009), Ted Reitsma

(2016), daughter, Patrica Morland (2012), and daughter in law, Ethel Howie (2018).

She is survived by son, Allen Howie and daughter, Carol Reitsma and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She enjoyed the little ones when they came to visit and had many family visits in her last few days.

Grandma will be missed by all of us.

Interment will be held at a later date in Summerland, BC.

For friends so wishing, donations can be made in memory of Hazel to the Dawson Creek Hospital Auxiliary, 11100 13th street, Dawson Creek BC V1G 0B7.
