Obituary of Connie Dalke

Connie Dalke, a resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly a long-time resident of Chetwynd, BC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 1, 2019 in Grande Prairie at the age of 80 years.

For those of you who don’t know me I am Amy Iles, Connie’s daughter. On behalf of our family, we appreciate your time for being with us today to celebrate mom’s life. Constance Anne Miller, was born September 27, 1938 in Grande Prairie AB.

Mom is the oldest of seven siblings and was raised on the family farm a mile outside of Wembley, Alberta. She was predeceased by her parents Doris and Jack Miller, her brothers Doug and Dave and by her sister Joan. Mom is survived by myself and husband Real, my brother Matt and his wife Ellen, and her grandchildren Amanda, Tanner (Kristian) and Trisha. Also mourning her loss are siblings Marlene, Dorothy, Ken, their families, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends.

Mom taught school to kids in grades 1 through 9 in a small country school across the Wapiti river, a mile south of Wembley. During that time, she had met Dad, and on August 24, 1957, they married and moved to Dawson Creek, where Mom worked for Dr Archibald for 6 years in his clinic.

In 1963 Mom and Dad made the long and arduous journey from Dawson Creek to Chetwynd, and that is where our family began.

During our upbringing, Mom embodied energy and vibrancy. Her generosity, big smile and classy sense of style brought her and us many compliments.

Mom then left Chetwynd in 1989, moved to Beaverlodge, and in 1990 she had moved with me to the Yukon. She was employed at the Yukon Archives as a research assistant, a position that she loved and excelled at. Mom left the Yukon in 1992 and moved to Grande Prairie when her first grandchild Amanda was born. Tanner followed in 1994, then Trisha in 1998.

A few years ago, Matt took Mom for a ride in his 69’ Camaro, shifting through the gears hard, frightening her. She wanted to yell at him but was too worried that he would crash the car. When they got home, she discovered that her vertigo, which she had been struggling with for quite some time, was miraculously cured. It never did return.

For Mom’s 75th birthday Matt, Ellen, and Trisha organized a trip to the Tundra for her, to see the Polar bears. There she saw many cute fluffy cubs, along with arctic foxes and hares.

When mom’s health began to waiver a few years ago, it was a big change for her and also for us. Over these years, Matt and Ellen along with our great friends moved mom from one place to another several times in Grande Prairie. Despite her failing health she never really complained, she kept her sense of humour and her strong faith and perseverance prevailed. Mom maintained her dignity and self dependency for as long as she could and when she knew she needed help, we were welcome to do so. We rallied together as a family many times.

We will miss you and love you for ever.

Home again , home again, Jiggity, jig.
