Obituary of Kyle Belcourt

Eulogy for Kyle Tyson Paul Belcourt July 06, 1988 – July 15, 2020

It is with great sadness in our hearts that we say goodbye to our spirited son, brother, uncle, and friend, Kyle (Buddha). Kyle was born in Dawson Creek BC to Madeline Annie Belcourt and Phillip Sowan on July 6th, 1988. A healthy, handsome, bouncing baby boy.

Kyle lived his life in Dawson Creek and attended various school throughout School District #59. School was not always his thing, as his Mom said, he quit school in Kindergarten, climbing a tree and refusing to come down. That was Kyle, strong willed and maybe just a bit stubborn.

Kyle joined the family of Guy and Laurie Wilson at the age of 11. Now he had two Mothers to reckon with! One he always kept as his Mom and the other became his Ma…. Together they made Mother. Kyle loved his family deeply, his childhood friends were also in that category of true and pure Agape love. Once he truly loved you he remained loyal and true no matter what happened. If you needed him by your side he was there.

Kyle chose a trade in carpentry and he was particularly fond of finishing work; patience and a bit of a perfectionist were poured into all jobs he took on. He worked for INS, Jock’s Restoration, Step by Step Enterprises, Bear Mountain Construction as well as helping those who could not afford to pay a contractor.

A love for animals found him signing up for a dog rescue program where he worked with dogs that were severely traumatized as victims of abuse. Kyle had healing hands with animals that promoted trust and a sense of calm for them. He was successful in rehabilitating several dogs that would otherwise have been put down. Kyle always had a dog in his life as long as we knew him, our angel boxer Roxy who travels with him today, Keno who he rescued at 5 weeks of age and rehomed to a loving home, and Chaos (Mr. Handsome); a rescue who he shares a special bond with.

Kyle will forever remain in our visions and memories through his beautiful art work that he left behind, his poetry, his letters, and time spent with him. We all have many fond memories of this trickster with his great sense of humour, pranking, and genuine laughter that lit up his entire face. You couldn’t help but laugh with him; it was contagious. He was a handsome dude and always kept himself stylin! in a way that reflected his personality. Kyle had a big heart and tried to help others by sharing what he had; ll    vacations, clothes, his home, and good times.

Kyle had a deep faith with his creator, practicing traditional spiritual culture in smudging, sweats, spending time by the creek just listening to the sounds around him and being at peace. He was learning to drum, draw traditional native art, and do beadwork. He also found peace and a connection through gardening and growing flowers.

Kyle suffered the last 10 years of his life with addiction. Those who met him throughout those years would never have the privilege of knowing the gentle soul who hid behind his wolf totem; being protected from hurt and harm that was intruding his life. His Mothers, brothers, sisters, and childhood friends never stopped trying to help him to turn his life around and become the man we all knew him to be.

Kyle leaves behind his love: Marrisa Mercredi who he would not let go….. always encouraging her and appreciating her good qualities.

His family: Mothers Madeline and Laurie, Fathers Guy and Deen;  Sisters: Lael (Geoff), Holly (Adam), and Megan (Shawn); Brothers: Darren (Cheylynn), Carver (Theresa) and Levi (Michelle). His nieces and nephews: Shania, Skylar (My Boy Blue), Seth, Samara, Stasia, Caleb, Ariel, Eden, Anna-Rose, Emmy, Khylar, Braelin, Mikaila, Autumn-Rain, Leighla, and Fallon. Numerous Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. In addition to his immediate family, he held a particular love for his extended family members Uncle Dwayne and Auntie Roxanne, his cousins Joefish and Shane.

His best friends for life: Roy (Emily, Deen, Isaiah, Julie), Will (Shawna), Tyrone, Jessie, Mike, Jeff, and Al. These boys never turned their back to him when he needed help; they walked alongside him.

Kyle has gone to join…… his Father Philip Sowan; his grandparents Bill and Eva Belcourt, his Grandma Bubble Gum (Iolene Halcro); sister Dena Belcourt, aunt Lorraine Laboucan, uncles Clifford Belcourt and Dale Madden, and his beloved dog Roxy.

Special gratitude to Pastor Cory Lizotte for sharing such a powerful message at Kyle’s service and to Elder Richard Lalonde for providing spiritual counsel to the family and drumming Kyle home to his ancestors.

Red Light – Green Light

I’m stuck at a red light

With choices to make

I have several different roads

 But only one to take

Each path has its bumps

And each its own way

That will keep me tight

And won’t let me stray

Never again will I be here

To get a second chance

Stuck at these crossroads

Taking forever to advance

I don’t have much longer

Before I have to go

I’ve torn myself apart

With my pain starting to show

Now a decision will be made

And I sure hope it’s right

Because as I look up

I see a green light
