Obituary of Bert Veiner

Bert Veiner, a lifelong resident of Dawson Creek, BC passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 86 years of age.

Bert was born in Pouce Coupe Hospital on Friday, March 16, 1934 to Ernest and Thora Veiner. Bert grew up and spent his lifetime in the Landry District. From a very young age Bert had a deep, strong connection to the land.

Bert attended Landry School, where he made lifelong community friends. Later he attended high school in Dawson Creek. Bert had to grow up early and take on heavy responsibilities when at 17 years of age his father Ernest passed away.

Bert and Ruth were married in 1956 and were blessed with a daughter Beverly in 1957, a son Darrel in 1961, and a daughter Trina in 1969. In 1958, Bert and Ruth moved to start their farming operation that eventually consisted of four original homestead properties. The family farm grew to producing grain, hay, cattle and registered quarter horses.  It was always busy on the family farm with seeding, haying, horse shows and harvest.

Bert worked to develop a good quarter horse breeding bloodline, with offspring ending up throughout Western Canada and as far away as Germany. Arrowhead Farms offspring garnered many awards and merits; Bert received the Certificate of 20 years recognition as a breeder from the American Quarter Horse Association.

Bert’s passion and commitment to farming, community, and family led him to many organizations. Bert was involved in 4-H, Rope and Saddle Club, Peace River Quarter Horse Association, National Farmers Union, C.C.I.L., Peace River Soil Conservation Association, Dawson Creek Seed Cleaning Plant, South Peace Land Owners Association, Sons of Norway and the South Peace Historical Society.  Bert served on Board positions within these associations and was part of the founding membership in many. Bert’s commitment to community service was always for the betterment of the community and future generations, never for recognition or accolades.

When Bert wasn’t busy on the farm and in his retirement, he could be found enjoying his many other passions. Many an evening was spent playing his guitar, having a good game of cards, dancing or just visiting with friends. He enjoyed being outdoors; camping, fishing, gold panning, canoeing, and hunting.  Bert always enjoyed getting time to watch and support his children and grandchildren at all of their activities.

Bert was predeceased by his daughter Bev Veiner, grandson Dustin Veiner, father Ernest, and mother Thora Veiner. He is lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his family, wife Ruth, son Darrel (Linda), daughter Trina (Jim), brother Clarence (Dorothy), grandchildren Aisha and Aleika (Darrel), Scott (Bev), Danica (Trina), and great-grandchildren Emmet and Hayes (Aisha).

Bert will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
