Obituary of Ed Sidoruk

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ed Sidoruk, long-time resident of Dawson Creek, British Columbia on Thursday, May 20, 2021.  Ed passed away at home in Dawson Creek, BC at the age of 81 years.  Due to COVID restrictions no formal service will be held at this time.  For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Ed to the British Columbia Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200-1212 West Broadway, Vancouver, British Columbia V6H 3V2.

Edward (Adam) Sidoruk

October 30, 1939 - May 20, 2021

Ed was born in Spirit River, AB, to John and Barbra Sidoruk who immigrated from the Ukraine in 1929.  He was the second youngest of seven children and they lived in a small one-room house outside of Spirit River that his parents had built.

His first job was working on a bridge.  Ed said they liked how he could climb and moved him to Peace River where he became a part of the bridge crew.   He worked at that job for six years.  It was there that he met Marlene Martin and they were married in Edmonton on February 6, 1962.

Shortly after that, they made their home in Dawson Creek, BC, where all their four children were born, Wendy Cassidy (Mike), Darcy (Sharon), Craig, Tammy (Raymond) Haugen.

After moving to Dawson in the 60’s, he became involved with the Stock Car Club which he enjoyed immensely.  I still remember seeing a newspaper article where he had won a race with his trophy and his infectious smile was so big!

He was very much a people person and always had people around.  Ed was a very hard worker and a jack of all trades.  In December 1969, he moved his family to Fort Nelson, BC, to work for Bob Keen as a Heavy-Duty Mechanic.  The work took him to places to get equipment ready for sale in the Richie Brothers Auctions.  Not too long after, his brother Bill joined him to work there as well.  Together, they were always taking on odd jobs which motivated him to start Sidoruk Mechanical Services.

Eventually he moved back to Dawson Creek and continued taking on odd jobs and working including on the pipeline to Cranbrook.  He was pretty much a MacGyver and could fix anything.  He was especially proud of a raised Quonset car lift since he was told it couldn’t be done.  After he lost his leg due to a clogged artery, he even made his own prosthetic. 

He was also proud of the birth of his fifth child, Nickie (Chris) Webber who followed later. 

Ed was predeceased by his parents and all his siblings as well as his grandsons, Trevor Sidoruk and Jordan Sidoruk. 

Ed leaves behind all his children and grandchildren, long-time close friend, Linda Desjarlais and her family, and Bob Young, brother-in-law.

We watched you tire, we watched you try

But all we could do was just stand by

When the time came, we suffered too

you did not deserve what you went through

God took your hand and we had to part

he eased your pain but broke our hearts

Hard working hands, you were the best

but now it’s time for you to rest.
