Obituary of Robert Bakstad

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Bakstad, resident of Charlie Lake, British Columbia, on Friday, February 4, 2022 at the age of 82 years.

Robert Elroy Bakstad, age 82 of Cecil Lake, BC passed away at his daughter and son-in-law’s home in Charlie Lake BC on February 4, 2022.

Robert was born in the Red Cross Hospital in Cecil Lake, BC on November 14, 1939, to Simon and Ellen Bakstad. He spent his life in Cecil Lake, with the exception of schooling in Calgary and living and working for his brother in laws plumbing company in Grande Prairie.

As a young man, Robert enjoyed travelling. He was adventurous throughout his life and an optimist always.

Robert met the love of his life and best friend, Carmel Fleming in 1961. They married April 14, 1962. Together they homesteaded their farm and raised their two children. They lived on their farm in Cecil Lake until August 2021.

Robert worked in the oil and gas industry throughout his life as a truck driver, equipment operator and plant operator. He made numerous friends in this industry and had many entertaining stories to share, always with a “twinkle” in his eye. He loved sharing stories.

Robert enjoyed the company of others. His humor was contagious. He was ready to help anyone, anytime and always had a word of encouragement to give freely to others.

Robert enjoyed farming, hunting, playing cards, strumming guitar, birdwatching and just being in nature. His desire for working his land never weakened even in his later years when challenged with health issues. His keen mind would always figure out a way to make things work, even if it meant mounting oxygen in his tractor to get his crop planted and harvested.

Robert is predeceased by his wife Carmel, son Daniel, his parents Simon and Ellen, brothers David (Gloria)and Ronald (Grace), and sister Margaret (Herb). He is survived by his son Robert, daughter Muriel (Ben), grandson Randy (Jena), granddaughter Lala, great grandsons Jack and Ben, sister Agnes (Owen), and brother Harold and a number of nieces and nephews.
