It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother, Hedy Berlinger, on February 9, 2022, in her 97th year.

She was predeceased by her husband John in 1989.

She is survived by her seven children; Wayne (Carol), Ken (Darlene), Jackie (Ross), Clarence, Calvin (Liz), Glenn (Barb), Darrell (Heather); 16 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Hedy was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on March 25, 1924. At six months old, she returned to Austria with our grandmother. Our grandfather remained in Brazil to work on the railway.

Our grandfather left Brazil to immigrate to Canada around 1926 and took up homesteading in Emberville, Saskatchewan, and shortly thereafter, our mom and grandmother joined him.

Our mother left home when she was 13 years old and spent her early teens working on various farms, cooking, and cleaning in the Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan area. At the age of 17 in 1941, Hedy met and married our father, John Berlinger. Shortly thereafter, our father enlisted in the army, and was away for the next three years, except for furloughs, where our mother would meet our dad in Vancouver, Vernon, and Nanaimo, which must have been exciting for a farm girl from Saskatchewan. During this chapter in Hedy’s life, her two oldest sons, Wayne, and Ken, were born. After the war ended in 1945, our parents continued farming in the Paradise Hill area and had their daughter Jackie.

In 1951, Hedy and John moved to Emberville, Saskatchewan, where they continued farming for another 5 years and had another son, Clarence.

In 1956, they moved to Chetwynd, formally known as “Little Prairie,” where Calvin, Glenn, and Darrell were born.

Hedy was active raising seven children and participating in various organizations, Little Prairie Ladies Club, Ladies Auxiliary and Royal Purple. Hedy went to work in 1965 at the Chetwynd Hotel and continued working there and various motels until 1972. After mom retired, she continued to be active with the Ladies Auxiliary and Royal Purple, but she was the happiest when she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Our mother spent the last 15 years in extended care at the Chetwynd Hospital and was overjoyed when visited by her children and her many friends. Her family was her pride and joy. She will be tremendously missed by all who loved her so much.

There is no love like the love of a mother. We will treasure her forever.

Celebration of Life will be held on Friday May 6, 1:00 pm at the Baptist Church in Chetwynd, British Columbia.
