Obituary of Lucille Jacobsen

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lucille Esther Jacobsen, a resident of Fort St. John, British Columbia, on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at the age of 73 years. A Celebration Of Life for Lucille will be held at a later date.

Lucille Esther Jacobsen (Knowles) was born on June 21, 1948 in the Pouce Coupe BC Hospital. She was the youngest of four other siblings (Jack, Harry, Dennis and Lorraine). She resided in Bonanza, Alberta until the family moved to Swift River, YT where her father took a job operating a grader for the Canadian Army. The family later moved to Whitehorse then Dawson Creek where Lucille went to Notre Dame Catholic School. Being good at sports was something that made her a force to be reckoned with. When it came to being picked for a team, she was always chosen quickly, no sitting on the side lines for her!  After graduation she married Richard Jacobsen and then her moving about the province began as Richard worked for the Department of Highways. She lived in Hudson’s Hope, Prince George, Smithers, McBride, and Sooke working at BC Telephone during some of these times. This was not easy being away from family and friends but she did so with a stoic attitude. Many letters went back and forth as there was not the technology that we have today. It was during this time that she was blessed with her first born Bradley who was born on her birthday! We remember her always preparing a special party for him while very unselfishly putting her day aside. Fifteen months later she was thrilled when her son Brock arrived completing their family. Later Lucille came back to Dawson Creek where she took up employment at L & T Services. She enjoyed working there then went on to Northern Lights College but decided she needed to further her career so she started at the Assessment Authority where after a few years of studies and courses, she became a successful Assessor. During her tenure at the Assessment, she had a very special friendship with Geri Grant. The two of them worked, traveled, partied and were true friends and always there for each other. In 1985, she met the love of her life, Bud Johnson who was her greatest support for many years. They enjoyed fishing and spent many weekends at Charlie Lake. Lucille also liked doing crafts and making quilts. She volunteered at the Hospital Auxilliary in Dawson Creek, the Seniors Centre in Tumbler Ridge as well as the Kordyban Cancer Lodge and Kidney Foundation in Prince George.

It was in 1982 that Lucille’s health started to be compromised with Crohns’s Disease which later forced her to quit work. This was very hard for her to accept and it affected her emotionally and physically. She was a trooper though and carried on very seldom complaining but facing this with a good attitude.

Her son Bradley broke his neck in 1994 becoming a quadriplegic.  This was devastating to her and Brock as well as the whole family and many friends. Bradley made her very proud though and devoted his life to helping others at GF Strong as well as assisting in coordinating the Peer Support Program for the Spinal Cord Injury of BC.

Lucille and Bud moved to Tumbler Ridge in 2003 where they enjoyed living and attending the many seniors’ events.  They acquired many friends in this small hospitable community. It was in 2013 that Bud passed away. Shortly after Lucille moved to Prince George as she had to go on dialysis with no hope of a kidney transplant. Again she faced this with courage and determination. She was devastated when her son Bradley passed away with cancer in February 2021. Having Brock and Tina there for support was so important to her.

Lucille moved to Fort St. John in December where she would be closer to Brock, Tina and other family members. Unfortunately it wasn’t long after that she was diagnosed with cancer and passed on April 13, 2022 with family members by her side.  What a battle she fought throughout many years of her life with major health issues but she never gave up.

She would be the first one to tell you that she lived a good life and raised two wonderful sons who made her proud. We miss her so much and she is so loved. Her pain is over!

Lucille is predeceased by her parents Mary and Harold Knowles, brother Harry Knowles, son Bradley Jacobsen along with many other aunts, uncles and cousins.

Lucille leaves behind her loving son Brock (Tina) Jacobsen, brothers Jack (Elaine) and Dennis Knowles, sister Lorraine (Fred) Sumners, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, along with many friends.

Thank you to the Renal Unit for the care Lucille received while she was in Prince George also Fort St. John for the short period of time she was there.
