Obituary of Trevor Wright

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Trevor Wright, a longtime resident of Farmington, British Columbia. Trevor passed away at the Dawson Creek and District Hospital on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at the age of 79 years, after a courageous battle with cancer. 

On Saturday, October 10, 1942, William Graeme Trevor Wright was born to proud parents Bill and Ivy Wright, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was the youngest of three boys. The Wright family moved from Winnipeg to Farmington in 1945 when Bill took work on the construction of the Alaska Highway. The family lived for a brief time at the army barracks near the Old Kiskatinaw Bridge, where Trev fondly remembered playing with the camp pet, a small black bear cub. They eventually settled at Mile 22 of the Alaska Highway, where Trevor and his brother Murray attended Parkland School.

In November 1968, Trevor married Susan Howes, and together they welcomed four children into the family - James in 1969, Brenda in 1971, Erin in 1976, and Dustin in 1978. In 1980, Trevor and Susan parted ways, but remained connected through their mutual love of their children.

In his youth, Trevor worked helping his mom do milk deliveries, working the fields with his dad and checking trap lines with his brother. In later years he worked as a millwright, among other jobs, and eventually followed in his dad’s footsteps to become a heavy equipment operator, a field in which he excelled and was greatly respected. He made many lifelong friendships through his work in the Peace Country and beyond.

Trevor worked as hard at home as he did in the field. Trev had a very close bond with his mother, Ivy, and so he built his family home just a short walk from hers. He grew his homestead into a sanctuary for himself, his children, and grandchildren. Full of fruit trees, flowers, and vegetable gardens. It is a place where all children who visit know that they can pick any snack or flower they wish. When she was small, his granddaughter called him Grandpa Treasure, as she couldn’t pronounce Trevor. It stuck, as Treasure seemed more fitting, because a treasure he was. After a day of working on his lawn or in his gardens, Trevor would sit on his deck, enjoying the sounds of the many birds he fed and the smell of petunias and evening scented stock while sipping an Old Style.

If he wasn’t in the garden, or out “checking the crops” with one of the boys, you could often find Trev at the “office”, enjoying a beer and a B.S. with his many friends, but there was always a spot at the table for one more. Or perhaps you might find him at home on his couch with his dog, a good book and a cup of tea, listening to music.

Time with his children came before everything else for Trevor. He was the king of the backroads in the summer, taking his kids on summer holidays all over the province, and often finding the less travelled path to get to the destination. The destinations often included hot springs, historical sights, little known rockhounding spots, and secret fishing holes. His children sweetly remember being packed on his shoulders up hills and through mountain meadows to find pristine lakes and waterfalls. Closer to home, many summer days were spent sipping beer on the banks of the Kiskatinaw River with his best friend Al, while their kids swam and played in the mud close by.

Trevor had very close bonds with his children and grandchildren. He passed on to them his love and knowledge of nature and history. He shared with them his favorite music and books. He made them delicious baked beans and borscht. His granddaughter and grandson will forever fondly remember his crepes. He was always good for a little pocket change or “loot”. He was wise and funny, generous, and strong.

Trevor will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by so many.

A Memorial Service for Trevor will be held on Friday, May 27, 2022 at 2:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Chapel. Pauline Haycock will officiate. Interment to follow in Sunrise Valley Mountain View Cemetery.
