Obituary of Jerry Mounce

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Arthur "Jerry" Mounce, long-time resident of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the age of 89 years.

Dad was born on May 6, 1933, in his family home in the district of Halcourt, Alberta. This is near the town of Beaverlodge, Alberta. He was the youngest of the three children born to Arthur Joseph Mounce and Helen Mounce.

His mother passed when he was only 14. Being the last child in the home it didn't take long until he was restless and left on his first adventure. He headed up the Alaska Highway at the young age of 16 to drive truck. He always told us the story of when he first arrived there, he didn't have much money so he would order hot water which was free and put ketchup and crackers in it to make soup.

He came back to Dawson Creek a few years later and had many jobs. One of which was working at the local movie theater, this is where he met our mom, Ina. They were married and had three children Guy in 1957, Karla in 1958, and Lorraine in 1960. Mom and Dad lived in Lone Prairie ranching with our grandparents Ida and Guy Ireland for a few years and then we moved to Dawson Creek.

Dad went back to trucking up the Alaska Highway. Dad did this until 1965 when he decided that he would try his hand at logging. He purchased a small mill that he set up just outside of Chetwynd on the Jackfish Lake Road. It was shortly after this that Jerry and Ina separated, and he met Corinne Weightman. Dad and Corinne moved in together along with her four sons Corkey, Dennis, Bryan, and Robert. She also had a grown son Barry that no longer lived at home. We, Jerry's children and Corinne's children, soon all became a happy blended family. We spent many happy summers and weekends making lasting memories together.

It was not long until Dad and Corinne became restless again and moved to Groundbirch, BC to try their hand at cattle ranching. They had a heard of 100 or more cows that had to be calved out, branded. etc. They both loved it, but Dad decided that wasn’t enough work, so he also purchased a logging truck and started to haul logs.

In about 2005, when they were in there 70’s, that they finally decided it was time to slow down so they moved back to Dawson Creek and started to enjoy there time together. They would go out on their side by side, camping and went to many music festivals and spent many hours of floor curling with their friends. Sadly, on November 23, 2021, after 53 years together, Dad lost Corinne at the age of 91.

It was very shortly after that dad's health started to fail and he moved into Northview for a little more help. While there he had many good visits with all his family and friends, but he was always the most grateful for his daughter Karla who took over his everyday care. She spent everyday with him taking him on journeys to Grande Prairie when he was up for it. She would shave him and cut his hair to keep him handsome. She ironed his shirts just the way he liked them with the crease down the arm. He would tell her you can't go downstairs to the dining room with out it.  He would say to her many times a day where are we going what are we doing. Dad spent his last day with family and friends coming to the hospital to say their goodbyes. His children were by his side until he passed.

Jerry will be missed by his children Guy (Kathy) Mounce, Karla (Rick) Lawrence, Lorraine (Wayne) Wilson; stepchildren Barry (Helen) Pontius, Dennis (Helene) Weightman, Bryan (Eileen) Weightman; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; as well as numerous extended family and friends.

Jerry was predeceased by his spouse Corinne Weightman; stepchildren Corkey Weightman and Robert Weightman.
