Obituary of Albena Johnstone

It is with deep sadness that the family of Albena Johnstone announce her peaceful passing on Wednesday, July 21, 2023 in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, at the age of 90 years.

Albena was born in Carvel, Alberta, to Eugene and Augusta Facette, on Sunday, May 21, 1933. She had three older brothers - Albert, Roy, and Wilfred.

Albena was well known her whole life for her avid knitting. I’m sure she knitted thousands of beautiful items for all her family and many friends. In her later years it was socks, gloves, toques, and blankets. Another passion after our dad passed was her love of rocks. Anytime anyone went on a trip she’d ask for a rock to add to her many collections.

She made many new friends in Dawson Creek since she moved there a year and a half ago. Her biggest love was her love of God, and she shared her beliefs with anyone who would listen. She read her Bible daily right up until her last morning alive. She was very fortunate to have family support and was able to keep busy and happy doing the things she loved. She had lots on her agenda and was worried that she may miss our first convention since Covid in Prince George at the end of July.

In her early years she worked at the trolley diner in Parksville on Vancouver Island and cooked in the logging camps where her brothers and dad worked. One unfortunate fellow complained about something, and mama’s brother Roy made him a tasty cup of hot chocolate (with exlax) and nailed the outhouse door shut!

Another story she used to tell, was how she used to wash her old French grandmother next door. She’d start at her feet and work up to her face. She was young, maybe 6, at the time.

Our dear mom is survived by her four daughters Robin Johnstone Cornell (Larry Cornell), Frances Crowder (Terry), Barbara Hansler (Delbert), Lorelei Johnstone; 27 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandsons.

She was predeceased by her husband Howard; children Wayne, Lynn, Douglas, Wanda, Heather; grandsons Jonnie, Danny; brothers Albert, Roy, Wilfred; and her parents Eugene and Augusta Facette.

A Memorial Service and tea will be announced at a later date. Please contact her daughters for more information.
