Obituary of Richard Daniel Sequens

Richard Sequens, a long time resident of Dawson Creek, B.C. passed away on Monday, November 10, 2014 in Dawson Creek, at the age of 73 years. A bundle of joy arrived January 29, 1941 to proud parents George and Mary Sequens at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was the only son and a joy to all. When Dick was six the family moved to Vancouver where they purchased a large acreage on Deer Lake in Burnaby which he loved, amidst his menagerie of birds, dogs, and his pony. After finishing school he married Donna Young they had two children and eventually moved to Dawson Creek. He soon established Tiger Printing, also publishing a local newspaper. After selling his business he moved over to CJDC as a Weatherman and soon moved into the News Director position. Dick reported the news daily on CJDC television and hosted a lively open line show. He took a three year leave to assume responsibility as the Tourist Co-ordinator for Northern B.C. His career ended in 1997 with the sale and reorganization of CJDC. Dick met Margo in 1991 and they were soon sharing a full life together. They bought their first home together in 1995 and married in 1996. Dick and Margo were a great couple and their favorite times were cooking fabulous meals with their house packed to the rafters with guests. Dick was a fabulous entertainer with his magic shows, card tricks, and coin tricks. He entertained children and adults alike. He travelled all over B.C. doing magic shows for ICBC, banks, children's functions and birthday parties. Dick also loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing, boating, quading and just being out and about. He was also very active with home renovations and yard projects, until failing health slowed him down in September 2013. He will be sadly mourned but forever remembered by all those who knew and loved him. A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 1:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Chapel. Pauline Haycock officiated, Interment will be at a later date. Richard is survived by his loving wife; Margo of 18 years, and a large extended family who all loved him, Daughter; Debbie (Jamie), Grandchildren; Zack and Simone, and Son; Grant. This is from Richards' daughter Deborah in Korea I was always so proud of my father. He was significant man, who made significant impacts on those around him.Some of my earliest memories of him are curled up in bed while he read a bedtime story delighting me with his expressive voices. Long car trips, before the days of DVDs and TV's in the car were made bearable by his singing old folk songs as we traveled along. And if he wasn't singing, we could always listen to the 8 track of 1950's tunes play over and over and over again. To this day, I still love 50's music, and have passed it on to my daughter who is the only 11 year old in the world that can sing Buddy Holly tunes, thanks to her Grandpa's influence. As we grew older, like all good fathers, his thoughts and actions were for the benefit of his kids. He wanted us to have the same experiences and joys that he had as a child, and more. He provided us with a hobby farm, where we could have the joys of riding horses and playing with the goats and dogs. He put in an in-ground pool for us, and taught us the gift of hospitality by encouraging us to have friends over to enjoy it. He invested in our education, and gently coaxed me out of my shyness by getting me involved in performing plays and helping with his Magic Shows. Even as a teenager, I was impressed with how he was constantly working on improving his own skills and talents. He never wasted time… he would be working on writing stories, preparing speeches, learning an instrument, carpentry projects, and of course, his love for delighting children with his magic shows. He was also always involved in the community of Dawson Creek, and could always be counted on to help organize and MC events. He taught me to always have the courage to speak up and express ideas, even if others didn't agree. He was always ready to take on a new challenge. My own children, Zach, age 14, and Simone, 11, adored their grandpa. Though we have always lived far away, the times spent with Grandpa Rick and Grandma Margo were intense memory making times. They talk of his great ventriloquist and magic shows, of teaching them how to do magic tricks, of him and Grandma Margo buying and putting together a trampoline for them, and then bouncing on it with them; of both him and Grandma Margo spoiling them with wonderful meals and fun outings both in Ontario and BC. They knew his love, and they loved him back fiercely. Seventy three is too young to pass away. But my father's life was lived fully and well. He was a man of many gifts and talents, and he never wasted them. I'm proud to be his daughter. I admire him so much. Situations and the distance from my home in Korea made it difficult for my husband, children and I to come to this public Celebration of my father's life, but there won't be a day that goes by when I will not celebrate this great man.
